For Another Contemporary Lyrical Theatre

The Visual Music Facilities Theatre

David Verdier
The Visual Music Facilities Theatre, a project of the Italian architect Valerio Maria Ferrari, could well propose a new model for contemporary lyrical theatre. Based on a spiral formed structure and an intertwining of the scene space and the spectator seats (which can pivot, allowing for a mobile and individualized perception of the show), as well as on LED technology transforming the entire hall into a huge screen, the building would be what so many contemporary composers have wished for without ever seen it realized: a concert hall not submitted to the traditional frontal organisation, where the ideal listening place has truly vanished, and where performance and spectators can merge. David Verdier, in this historical, reflexive and technical text, offers perspectives to envisage the possibility of this new space for theatre.
